I started to get interested in belly-button rings when I was in about 8th grade, but really thought nothing of it. I knew my parents would NEVER go for the idea, and I play basketball, so I thought that this would be a big NO-NO. My freshman year, I was getting more into it, and started to bug my mom. She said absolutly not, she works at the hospital and she was worried about all the infections that are possible. My grandparents said that they would disown me. So I didn't even try to pursue it.
This year when I was vacationing in Florida for spring break with my sister and brother-in-law, my best friend e-mailed me and said that she had gotten hers done. I called her right away, and she (being the wimp that she is) said that it hurt a lot and that it almost killed her. I didn't really care though, I knew that she was a baby when it came to pain. I told my grandparents about it (we were staying with them down there) and they both said that it was stupid. I called my mom that night and she didn't really say anything about it. When I got home, I wouldn't let it go, so my mom and grandparents finally said that they didn't care. I had had my friend show them hers, and they could see that it wasn't really that big of a deal, and that she didn't have like three heads or something because of it. I think that once they saw it, it became more of a reality, and not so much of an awful thing that bad kids do. They were mostly worried about infection though. But I had done m y research and I knew how to take care of it. I was really worried about basketball, but I didn't let that stop me. A few other girls on the team had there's done, and it didn't really seem to bother them, so I decided to go ahead with it anyway.
I asked my boyfriend to come with me, and he did. I called the night before I went to make an appointment. We got there kinda early the next day (about 12:30) I was freaking out inside. I kept asking myself what the hell I was doing. But once I got in there, I became a little calmer. They gave us some papers to fill out and had my mom sign some things, then i went in the room with my boyfriend (my mom didn't want to watch because I was such a baby when i got my ears done) The guy took FOREVER getting everything ready. When he finially was, he started to clean my belly-button and he had me stand up so he could mark it, and it looked good. So when I sat back down and he came at me with the clamps. I closed my eyes then. The clamps didn't hurt at all, I just felt a little pressure. Then he put in the needle. While he was piercing he was saying things like "keep breathing, Jesus loves you" which actually kinda helped. The piercing barely hurt at all. It was just kinda like a p inch, and then some dull pain (my boyfriend told me that i squeezed his hand pretty hard tho!). The piercer said that he had the jewlery in and all he had to do was put the ball in. I was like "Ok! what are you waiting for?! I was ready to go. He snapped the ball in and i was done. Once he was done, i didn't feel anything. After that, it hurt to sit down or to bend over, but only for like a week. Now I don't even notice it. My grandparents weren't too thrilled about it, but they don't really care. My dad didn't know that i was going to get it done, but i showed him as soon as i got home that night. He thought it was dumb, but that was pretty much all he said. I haven't showed my other grandma yet. I know that she won't like it, so I think I am going to hide it from her a little bit longer.
I play basketball with it all the time and it gets knocked around, but it doesn't bother me at all. I did sea salt soaks for a while, but not anymore, I just clean it twice a day with Dial Anti-bacterial soap. I haven't changed the ring yet, but I am going to go back to the place that i got it done so they can do it for me. I think I am going to go next weekend and I can't wait!
